‘Embroidered Flowers and Burning Horses’
charcoal, pastel, pencil and ink on paper, 29.5 x 23 x 18 cm

My original drawing was a response to Federico García Lorca’s melancholic poem The Gypsy Nun. Over time I continued to work into it, and inspired by Sandra Vásquez de la Horra’s paper sculptures, it gradually took the form of a house.

I’m enjoying the paradoxes that have emerged from this piece: the repression and longing of a nun, the movement of a gypsy, and the grounded firmness of a house.

I recently discovered the work of Sandra Vásquez de la Horra after seeing her piece, ‘Awake I Wait for You’ (2022) at @tate modern. Loved that she shared the room with Cuban printmaker Belkis Ayón. Both artists draw upon indigenous belief systems to reflect on the role of women in nature and society.

You can find their works in the ‘In the Studio’ room. I was inspired to explore beyond the leporello format, imagining my own drawings and prints as 3D structures.

My creative journey is one of constant experimentation and introspection. Over the years, I’ve filled my studio with drawings and prints. Sometimes I revisit them, and they offer up new ideas. Here’s a drawing I reworked, giving it a new form - a 3D visual narrative.

I haven’t given it a title yet, but I welcome your thoughts.
